How thick should tape be to seal moving boxes?
asked by Sarah on April 6, 2016

Moving box tape should be at least 2.47 mil thick, and have a minimum tensile strength of 34 lb. per inch. Duck® Carton sealing tape is 3.1 mil thick, and has a tensile strength of 35 lb. per inch.

I am looking for the best tape for moving boxes (residential). Is there a difference between shipping box tape and moving box tape? Do I need to use a tape with hot melt adhesive, or is acrylic ok? Also, is it easier to find the edge of thicker tapes?

Hi Dan,

Thank you for your questions about Duck Carton Sealing Tape.

There are differences between acrylic and hot melt adhesive tapes. Both are good, strong tapes, but hot melt is specially designed for commercial and shipping applications. Hot melt is strong enough to handle repeated rough handling. In fact, hot melt tape is so strong, it is not only used to seal shipping boxes, but also to securely strap them together.

Acrylic tape is plenty strong enough for a residential move, and Duck makes some of the best. You can be sure that any moving box you seal with good acrylic packaging tape will stay closed until you are ready to unpack.

If you want to get super technical about things, moving box tape should be at least 2.47 mil thick, and have a minimum tensile strength of 34 lb. per inch. This Duck Tape is 3.1 mil thick, and has a tensile strength of 35 lb. per inch, so you're good to go.

It is somewhat easier to "find the edge" with thick tapes like this. But the most reliable way to eliminate that problem is to use a tape dispenser. Tape dispensers prevent waste, and allow for quick, easy cuts. You don't have to worry about accidentally splitting (and wasting) long lengths of tape trying to separate the tape from the roll.

Make sure your tape and dispenser cores are the same size, and that the width is close. For example, this Duck Tape has a 3" core, and is 1.88" wide. So you would something like the Universal® Handheld Box Sealing Tape Dispenser , which has a 3" core and is 2" wide.

Hope this answers all your questions! Good luck with the move!

Just used this tape to seal a box for mailing. Very strong and sticky. I used less tape than normal. A little more expensive that Scotch Brand, but heavier and I think I would need to use less.

This clear packing tape is easy to use and appears to stay clear when being used. It was easy to adhere. It's durability makes it a must in every home or classroom. As a classroom teacher, this product can be used for more then just closing boxes. It can be used to adhere nametags to desk and lockers. It can be used to protect the edges of posters and even adhere the posters to the walls. This tape cuts easily and is very convient to use in a classroom. Students will be able to use it for classroom projects. Love when a product is multi purposed.

The Carton Sealing Tape is Tape - but this thicker than the normal packing tape. I find I don't waste any since it doesn't fold into its self. One taping on the seam of a package is all you need.

Duck is a reputable brand so I expected a lot from this Carton Sealing Tape. For the most part, it responded. The tape releases smoothly from the roll and is not easily torn. It does require scissors or a box knife to cut. Fingerprints do show on the sticky side so it has to be handled carefully is it's going to be used as a covering. The tape has a heavy durable feel to it and held a box closed securely despite my "roughing it up" during a test. For use in the classroom, I would use it to secure book bindings.

This tape is pretty awesome. It is super sticky. In fact, if you lay it down on its side against paper, it will stick to it. Haha! The adhesive appears to leak out from the tape or something so that you can actually feel it. Be careful where you lay it down at so it doesn't become adhered to it. The stickiness does make it extra useful in terms of packaging. It will certainly stick to your package and keep the contents safe. Plus, it's from the great brand we all know and love - Duck!

I was in the process of moving to a new classroom and needed some tape. The tape was great and sealed the boxes. I didn't have trouble at all with it lossening up when moving the boxes.
