The accidental idea that led to the use of paper towels originated in 1907 when a railroad car full of paper intended for making toilet paper was found to be too thick. Scott Paper Company decided to repurpose this material by perforating it into sheets and marketing it as disposable towels for cleaning, eventually leading to the development of the paper towels we use today.
