1. Put pencil up-side down, push the plunger to the end, then insert lead from tip.
2. Insert lead completely to the tip, and the plunger is pushed in the end during the whole process.

I unscrewed the tip and the barrel is plugged with a white piece encased in a brass colored collar that will not accept the lead. It is a 5mm pencil and i am using 5 mm lead.
