Congratulations to all the new graduates of 2013! The good news is, you probably won’t be unemployed forever, despite what you may have heard in some of the more hysterical media reports. According to the New York Times, college grads are doing pretty well in this tough economy. College graduates have a lower rate of unemployment — 3.9% vs. the 7.5% for  workforce as a whole.

The not-so-good news?  Your first job might outside your degree field. Or a job that traditionally didn’t even require a degree. The job market has improved from the nadir of the recession, but most of the new jobs are low-skilled work.  From The Times:

There is ample evidence that employers are hiring college-educated workers for jobs that do not actually require college-level skills — positions like receptionists, file clerks, waitresses, car rental agents and so on.

‘High-skilled people can take the jobs of middle-skilled people, and middle-skilled people can take jobs of low-skilled people,’ said Justin Wolfers, a professor of public policy and economics at the University of Michigan. ‘And low-skilled people are out of luck.’

Starting to regret the time and money you spent on that degree? Don’t — a college degree still pays off in the job market.  You can expect to earn about 80% more than workers without a degree.  So, despite the calibrated expectations and flexibility needed to navigate this job market, your education was still worth the investment.

We got an interesting question at On Time Supplies recently: can you use plastic DYMO label tape as plant tags? Seemed like a good idea to us! It’s National Bike To Work Month, the perfect time to dust off the old ten speed and give bicycle commuting a try. The Weather Channel posted a video of Al Roker describing the pleasure he gets from seeing New York while the “city is still asleep” when he bikes to work. Plus, it’s a great way to get some exercise. But bicycle commuting offers other benefits than exercise and the opportunity to slow down and enjoy the scenery. Bike to work, and you’ll reap great health and monetary rewards.

Bicycle commuting saves money — a LOT of money.

Just look at the numbers from AAA and the Sierra Club: your car costs you about $8,900 a year, thanks to fuel, maintenance and insurance costs. Traffic jams alone cost commuters more than $700 in wasted fuel burned while idling. Compare that to a bike, which only costs $310 a year to maintain:

“If American drivers were to make just one four-mile round trip each week with a bicycle instead of a car, they would save nearly 2 billion gallons of gas. At $4 per gallon, total savings would be $7.3 billion a year.”

The bicycle commuting tax credit: get paid for taking your bike to work.

You not only save money with bicycle commuting, you can earn some too, thanks to the bicycle commuting tax credit. Uncle Sam will reimburse you up to $20 a month for expenses just for regularly taking your bike to work instead of your car. Get the details at the National Center for Transit Research.

You inhale less exhaust when you bike to work than when you drive.

File this bicycle commuting fact under “who knew?” It’s counter-intuitive  but it turns out that you inhale more harmful fuel emissions  driving than biking. According to environmental news blog  The Grist, the reason is location, location, location: drivers are “very close to sucking on the tailpipe of the MES just ahead of them… bikers and pedestrians are on the outskirts.”

I really like this coffee maker’s compact design because I’ve managed to find a place for it in an endless sea of toasters, bread makers, and slow cookers. As someone who hates to wash dishes, I like it because I can toss almost every part into the dishwasher. The only part that the manual claims is not dishwasher safe is the plastic part in back you pour water into. That’s unfortunate, but at least I don’t have to hand-wash the gross parts. The coffee flows out smoothly and quickly, which is nice when I’ve waited too long to brew and my withdrawal headache starts settling in. It is somewhat loud when it’s brewing, which is odd.
